The Knowledge Press: Privacy Policy
Flux-Frontiers. Effective 2026-09-28.
The Knowledge Press is a reading and research app for a library of
public-domain books. It is built to work on your device with the network
off. This page says what the app, and the Knowledge Press Forest website,
do and do not do with your data.
What we collect
Nothing. The app has no accounts, no sign-in, no analytics, no
advertising, no crash reporting, and no third-party software development
kits. We do not receive your questions, your reading history, or anything
else from the app. There is no server of ours for the app to talk to.
What stays on your device
- The library. The books, their search index, and the
query embedder are installed with the app. Searching and reading never
leave the device.
- Your conversations and your press. Questions,
answers, and the books you have saved are stored in the app's own
Application Support folder on the device. They are part of your device
backup if you back the device up; the library itself is excluded from
backups because it can be reinstalled.
- Settings. Kept in the app's preferences on the
device.
Deleting the app deletes all of it.
Optional answer engines
On a device with Apple Intelligence, the on-device engine is the
default; without it, answers are off and the app shows you the passages
it found. You can choose among three engines in Settings. Two of them send
data off the device, and only when you choose them.
- On-device uses Apple Foundation Models on the
device. Nothing leaves it.
- Private Cloud uses Apple Foundation Models on
Apple's Private Cloud Compute. Your question and the passages the app
retrieved for it are sent to Apple under Apple's Private Cloud Compute
commitments, not to us. See
Apple's
Private Cloud Compute documentation.
- Worker sends your question and the retrieval to a
server at an address you type in yourself, typically one you run. We do
not operate a worker for the public and do not see that traffic. What
that server does with the data is up to whoever runs it.
The Knowledge Press Forest website
The Knowledge Press Forest, at
flux-frontiers.github.io/knowledge_press,
is the same library as a forest you walk through in a web browser. Like
the app, it has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no cookies,
and it sends us nothing.
- What it keeps in your browser. The books in your
press, the groves you have visited and your settings are saved in your browser's local storage on your
device. They are not sent anywhere. Clearing the site's data in your
browser deletes them.
- Your location, if you allow it. When you start, the
forest asks your browser for your location so the sun, moon and stars
stand where they do for you. It rounds the location to a tenth of a
degree (roughly 10 km), keeps it only in your browser's local storage, and
uses it only in your browser to place the sky. If you decline, the sky
estimates a location from your time zone. You can withdraw the permission
in your browser's settings at any time.
- Reading aloud, if you turn it on. The tour's grove
captions are spoken by your browser's own speech synthesis. On Apple
devices that uses the system voices on the device. Some browsers offer
online voices; if yours uses one, the caption text goes to that service.
The captions describe the library and contain nothing about you.
- Hosting and fonts. The site is served by GitHub
Pages, and its fonts are loaded from Google Fonts. Like any website,
those services receive your IP address and browser details with each
request, under
GitHub's
privacy statement and
Google Fonts'
privacy notice. We do not receive that information.
- Reading books. The public site cannot open a book's
text. Reading works only when you run the forest yourself alongside a
GutenbergKG worker you run; the forest then asks that worker for a book's
chapters and nothing else.
Children
The app is rated 13+ on the App Store because the library includes
classic literature written for adults. We do not knowingly collect
personal information from anyone, of any age.
Changes
If the app ever starts collecting anything, this page will say what and
why, with a new effective date, before that version ships.
