GutenbergKG — Corpus Wishlist

Checklist of high-priority additions. Work in cross-genre batches — downloads are fast, ingest takes ~15 min on a fast Mac.

Format: - [ ] Title — Author (Gutenberg ID #NNNNN | IA) — check the box when downloaded + ingested.

Reconciled against the corpus 2026-09-02. Every checkbox here was compared to the Project Gutenberg ID recorded in each book's reference.md, which is the authoritative per-book record -- neither the catalog files nor the titles are reliable for this (books exist on disk that no catalog lists, and several IDs here were simply wrong, including #5765 given for three different books). 34 boxes were checked, 5 unchecked, 13 IDs corrected. gutenkg audit reports the corpus itself clean at 241 books; the drift was in this file alone.

Internet Archive: The entire IA corpus is not yet represented here. The gutenkg ia command handles IA downloads separately from Gutenberg. IA is the right source for: technical manuals (Audel, trade catalogues), out-of-print scientific monographs, periodicals, and government documents not on Gutenberg. An IA-focused wishlist section should be built out as a separate planning effort — see gutenkg ia survey for discovery.

  • [ ] Audels Practical Electricity — Richey (IA: audels_practical_electricity)

  • [ ] Audels Radiomans Guide (IA: audelsradio)

Audels Electric Library — 8 of 10 held (2026-09-02)

Consolidated here from ../ia_kg, which held 8 volumes to this repo's 2 and was the better copy. Re-downloaded rather than file-copied: the two repos share the same OCR/markdown code (clean_ocr, _is_heading, text_to_markdown and the rest are byte-identical between ia_kg/download_ia.py and gutenberg_kg/ia.py, verified by diffing both parses of Vol 1 -- 20,315 lines identical, only the title line differed), so the bytes match either way, but re-downloading routes through this repo's idempotence, catalog write-back and reference.md writer and does not depend on the two staying in sync.

All held volumes are the 1929 edition, public domain.

  • [x] Vols 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10 (IA: audels-electric-library-vol-<n>)
  • [ ] Vol 5 — not in ia_kg either; needs an IA search
  • [ ] Vol 6 — not in ia_kg either; needs an IA search
  • [ ] ~~Audels New Electric Library Vol VIII (IA: audelsnewelectri008004mbp)~~ REMOVED 2026-09-02 — rights. A 1962 edition, not the 1929 set: no licence field, bulk universallibrary upload, so not safely public domain the way the 1929 volumes are. It was also the inferior copy of the same volume (25,241 lines against the 1929 scan's 36,611) and its IA title became a 100-character directory name. Replaced by audels-electric-library-vol-8.

Curation note: IA plain-text dumps have OCR garbage before the first real chapter heading and scattered artifact lines throughout. Strategy: strip everything before the first CHAPTER / PART match, then run a noise-filter pass on short garbled lines. Candidate for a dedicated --source ia --curate preprocessing flag in the download pipeline.

Fun & Curiosities (Internet Archive — new genre, e.g. curiosities)

Surfaced by an gutenkg ia search survey (2026-09-01). Genuine period pieces, not modern reprints, unless flagged. Not yet downloaded — parking here for later triage.

Rights checked against https://archive.org/metadata/<identifier> on 2026-09-02. Struck-through entries failed that check and must not be downloaded. An IA search hit's year is the edition scanned, not evidence the text is free — both rejections below looked like period pieces in search results.

  • [ ] ~~Xiccarph — Clark Ashton Smith, Ballantine Adult Fantasy ed. (IA: XiccarphClarkAshtonSmithLennySAMouse)~~ REJECTED — in copyright. A scan of the 1972 Ballantine paperback (cover art by Gervasio Gallardo), uploaded by a personal account to pulp_misc_sf. No licence or rights field. Smith died 1961, so life+70 runs to 2031 regardless of the edition. Use the Gutenberg substitutes below.
  • [ ] ~~Hollow Earth Tales (IA: hollow-earth-tales-free-e-book)~~ REJECTED — CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. A 2020 compilation by "Nighttime Editions" advertising their own six-volume paperback set. The ND (NoDerivatives) term is the blocker: chunking, embedding and serving excerpts is exactly the derivative use it forbids. NC conflicts with a public corpus too. Use the Gutenberg substitutes below.
  • [x] Miracle Mongers and Their Methods — Harry Houdini, 1920 (IA: MiracleMongersAndTheirMethodsByHarryHoudini) (rights OK — published 1920, US public domain; folkscanomy scan, full _djvu.txt present)

Gutenberg substitutes for the two rejects

Both rejected IA items have clean public-domain equivalents on Gutenberg. The hollow-earth set is arguably the better holding anyway: the primary novels rather than one modern anthology of them.

Clark Ashton Smith — his pre-1931 verse is the only Smith that is actually free. IA carries no clean Smith at all (a search returns modern reference guides and an RPG module). Filed under american-literature: these are poetry collections, not horror fiction, so shelving them with Lovecraft would have mis-stated what they are. (Ingested to horror first, then moved 2026-09-02 via kgrag unregister -> mv -> gutenkg re-register.)

  • [x] Ebony and Crystal: Poems in Verse and Prose — Clark Ashton Smith, 1922 (#53333)
  • [x] The Star-Treader, and Other Poems — Clark Ashton Smith, 1912 (#38410)

Hollow earth — proposed genre science-fiction, where the corpus already holds Pellucidar; Journey to the Center of the Earth sits in french-literature.

  • [x] Symzonia: Voyage of Discovery — Captain Adam Seaborn, 1820 (#54485) (the founding hollow-earth novel)
  • [x] Etidorhpa; or, The End of Earth — John Uri Lloyd, 1895 (#37775)
  • [x] The Coming Race — Bulwer-Lytton, 1871 (#1951) (subterranean race; coined "vril")

Letters & Correspondence (new genre — gutenkg genres add letters)

Epistolary works as a distinct genre from diaries; letter collections reveal personality and social context in ways essays cannot. Wide date range: Pliny (1st c. AD) → Keats (1820).

  • [x] Letters on England — Voltaire (#2445)
  • [x] Letters to His Son — Lord Chesterfield (#3352)
  • [x] Letters — Pliny the Younger (#2811)

  • [ ] Letters of Charles Lamb (#1633)

  • [x] Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl — Harriet Jacobs (#11030)

Natural History & Science (new genre — gutenkg genres add natural-history)

Drama (non-Shakespeare; new genre — gutenkg genres add drama)
