Reading the records¶
Every tree is one family line, and every line has a record reader with one page for each of its people.
A tree's card¶
Slow down within about 7 m of a tree and its card appears at the bottom left. Driving past at speed does not raise it. The card shows:
- the surname and the line's name, such as "The Kennedy line";
- its founders: the founder and the founder's spouses;
- how many people the line holds and the years they were born across;
- a one-line summary.
Its buttons:
- Add to the album (E) adds the line to your album. Farther away it reads Move closer with the distance.
- Open the records opens the record reader on the line.
- Fly there, in god's eye only, sets the cart down beside the tree.
The close button dismisses the card until you reach another tree. Clicking or tapping a tree pins its card, even in silent mode; clicking open ground clears it. In silent mode no card appears on its own, and on the guided tour the tour's own card takes its place.
On the hub plaza the hub card describes the home tree instead; see The orchard.
The record reader¶
Open the records opens the line at the person you were last reading in it this session, or at its founder. The header names the line, the years it spans, and the person on the page with their years.
A page holds:
- a short summary of the person's life;
- Events: birth, marriage, death and the others the record holds, with dates and places;
- Parents, Children and Spouses, each a link;
- GEDCOM record: the person's lines from the source file, with the file name and line numbers.
A link to a relative on the same line turns to their page. A link to a relative on another line opens that line's reader at their page.
To move through the line:
- Left and Right, or Previous and Next at the bottom, turn to the previous or next person. The count between them says where you are.
- The Person menu at the top jumps to anyone in the line.
- Up and Down scroll the page.
- Esc, the close button, or a click outside the page closes the reader.
In schematic mode, tapping a person's bead opens the reader at their page.
A person who may be living has a page that reads "Living. Details are withheld for people who may be alive." See Privacy and the demo families.
Make this the home tree¶
Make this the home tree, in the reader's header, grows the home tree around the person on the page: their descendants as the crown and their ancestors as the roots. The orchard regrows, which takes a moment, and the home line marks move to that person's line. The choice is saved for this family in this browser. When the person on the page is already the home person, the header says The home tree instead. Living people cannot be made the home tree.
The album¶
The album holds the lines you have added. L, or Browse in the top bar and then the Album tab, opens it. Each entry has Open, which opens the record reader, and Grove, which jumps to the line's grove.
Lines go into the album with E beside a tree, Add to the album on a card, Add on touch, or A on a gamepad. Each line you add also rides in the cart, in its grove's color.
As the album grows, it earns a rank, shown at the top of the Album tab and announced when it changes:
| Rank | Lines in the album |
|---|---|
| Reader | The first |
| Clerk | A tenth of the family's lines |
| Registrar | A quarter |
| Archivist | Half |
| Keeper of the Line | Every line |
Empty the album, at the bottom of the Album tab, asks first and then takes every line out. Each family keeps its own album.
