Getting started¶
The Knowledge Press Forest runs in a browser at flux-frontiers.github.io/knowledge_press. It needs WebGL, which every current desktop and mobile browser has. Nothing is installed, and nothing about you leaves the browser except the requests that fetch the page and the book text.
Start driving¶
- Open the forest. The trees grow while the start screen shows a picture of the forest, which takes a few seconds on a phone; then the live forest fades in behind the title, the camera slowly circling the redwood.
- Press Start driving, or Guided tour to let the cart drive the ring and stop at each grove. About says what the forest is, lists every control, and tells you what is in tonight's sky.
The forest opens in the season of today's date where you are, under your own sky right now. To change the season, use Environment in settings; Winter drops the leaves so you can see the wood. To change the time, tap the clock in the top bar.
You start at home, on the plaza in front of the corpus redwood, facing its plaque. The groves are out along the roads.

Touch¶
On a phone or tablet the controls are on screen:
- Left stick: drag up to drive, down to reverse, sideways to steer.
- Drag anywhere else: look around. Drag up or down to tilt the view, left or right to look to the side. Tilt holds; the sideways look eases back when you let go.
- Read: reads the nearest tree into the press. It lights up when a tree is close enough.
- Guided tour: starts the tour; the same button ends it.
- Pinch: in god's eye, zooms toward the point between your fingers.
Everything else is in the top bar: home, Browse (groves, every book and the press), and the three-dot menu, which holds the clock, silent mode, the screenshot button, clean view, settings, About and Exit to the start screen. On a wider screen these are buttons in the bar; Exit is the last.
Gamepad¶
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| Left stick or d-pad | Drive and steer |
| Right stick | Look around |
| A | Read the nearest tree |
| Left trigger | Brake |
| Right trigger | Hurry |
The screen¶
- Top left: the lantern query. Type a word to light the groves that match it. See Finding books.
- Top right: home, Browse (groves, every book and the press), the screenshot button, the clock and settings. On a phone the bar keeps home and Browse, and the rest move to the three-dot menu.
- The clock: the sky's time. Tap it to step through live, dawn, day, dusk and night. See Sky, seasons and weather.
- The minimap: the roads, the groves as colored dots, the exhibits as gold diamonds, and you. Tap a grove to list its books.
- Cards: when you drive up to a tree, its card appears with the book's title, author and an excerpt. See Reading and the press.
Where your progress lives¶
The books in your press, the groves you have visited and your settings are saved in this browser only. They do not follow you to another device or another browser, and a private window forgets them when it closes. Empty the press in the Press tab clears the press, and Reset all settings clears the settings; see Settings.
