What leaves your device

By default, nothing.

With the on-device engine

The books, the search index and the language model are all on the device. A question you ask is not sent anywhere, and the app works in airplane mode. Your conversations are stored on the device. They are in your device backup, and are not sent to us or to anyone else.

With Private Cloud

Your question and the chosen passages go to Apple's Private Cloud Compute, under Apple's privacy guarantees. They do not come to us. We run no servers in that path. You choose this one answer at a time: switching back to On-device stops it at once.

With a worker

Your question and the passages go to the address you entered, a machine you chose and control. The app contacts no worker until you enter an address. Illustrations and the Render button need one.

No tracking

The app has no account, no analytics and no advertising. The privacy policy states this in full.
